Area Information: Donna is located midway between Brownsville and Rio-Grande City, 5 miles east of McAllen. The town is named after the Daughter of Pioneer, T.J. Hooks. Donna Hooks Fletcher, who lived in Donna until her death in 1959. The Donna Hooks Fletcher Historical Museum features local Pioneer memorabilia from the 1800's.
The Groto of Lourdes - 1928: Northeast corner of Britton Ave. - Hours of Operation: Daytime - The Groto is an replica of the Groto of Lourdes in France. Located about 30 miles west of Donna. It is built of rocks and petrified wood found in Starr County in the 1920's. It measures 30 X 90 feet. The statue of the virgin and the peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirds, costing $1000 a piece, came from Loomis Studio in Paris. Dedicated 1928.
Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge: South of Alamo at US 281 and FM 907 - Phone Number: 956-787-3079 - Hours of Operation: Daytime 9am-4:30pm - The final destination for birders from all over the world. Located 15 minutes drive from the motel. 2080 acre refuge boasts more species of birds than any other spot in the world. Its mascot is the rare chachalco, a sort of wild chicken found only in the Rio Grande Delta. Tram tours are available on seasonal schedules.
